Strabane District Council has agreed to appoint a design team for the Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge at Melvin. The Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan explained: “Strabane District Council has identified the Pedestrian Bridge at Melvin as a priority project within its Corporate Plan and Council remains firmly committed to its completion. The initial job of the design team will be to scope out the costs to enable the submission of a revised business case to the Department for Social Development, as requested by Minister McCausland.”
Referring to a recent statement by the Minister for Social Development in the Assembly, Councillor Kerrigan added: “Strabane District Council is delighted with the Department’s continued commitment to the Strabane Community Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge at Melvin and is particularly pleased that it is featured in the Department’s forward work plan for capital projects during the current spending review. The Council also thanks the Department for securing the services of the Central Procurement Directorate to assist the Council in the appointment of the design team.”
Cllr Kerrigan concluded: “Council is working extremely hard to bring this significant project to fruition. We have a target to complete the Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge at Melvin by 2015. It is an ambitious project but I have every confidence that it will be completed as planned, provided we have the necessary funding commitment from DSD and DRD.”
