Council urges everyone to come to Strabane on Saturday for the Paralympic Flame Celebration

Strabane District Council is urging everyone to come to Strabane on Saturday for a fantastic fun day out. Strabane is one of seven towns and cities in Northern Ireland selected to host a “Flame Celebration” to celebrate the Paralympic torch relay. The event will be held on Saturday 25 August 2012 between 12noon and 4.30pm and will take place in Melvin Sports Complex and Strabane Town Centre.

Strabane District Council’s Chairman Councillor Thomas Kerrigan said: “This is going to be a fantastic day out. We have lots of fun events and activities planned and I would encourage everyone to come to Strabane and get involved. I am so pleased that Strabane District has been chosen to celebrate the Paralympic torch relay which will help light the way to the Paralympics.”

At 10.30am on Saturday 25 August the Paralympic flame will leave Stormount, Belfast and arrive in Strabane at 12.30pm. A procession with the flame will leave Melvin Sports Complex in an open top car and travel into the town centre. The parade will include local children following the lantern with their own hand made lanterns.

Chairman of Strabane Town Forum, Councillor Brian McMahon said: “The town centre is going to be buzzing with activity and fun. From midday we will have the Paralympic lantern parade, free face painting, nail art, temporary tattoos, arts and crafts, balloon modelling and cage soccer. The town will come alive with cartoon characters, jugglers, stilt walkers and on-street entertainment. There also will be a live broadcast from Q102. Local shops have also got involved and will enter a window dressing competition. It will be a great day to be shopping in our town centre.”

At 2pm in Melvin there will be a family fun day with bouncy castles, laser tag, mini golf, mini paralympic games, a 5 Star Disability Sport Challenge and a track parade with the flame and all participating children.

“It really is going to be a great day out for all the family. I would encourage everyone to come to the town centre and Melvin that day to give the paralympic flame a warm local welcome” said the Chairman.
