Derg Valley Leisure Centre is to undergo a complete refurbishment over the coming months. Strabane District Council has announced the contractor for the construction, Lowry Brothers, and construction will commence on 20th August 2012.
The refurbishment proposals have been designed by Tracey Architects, with a focus on delivering a quality and cost effective build, with £588,000 to be invested.
This is the first of the Council’s major redevelopment plans to go on site. The scheme includes a new gym and fitness centre offering 273sq metres of exercise space. A full range of cardio vascular equipment including treadmills, cross trainers, cycles, rowing machines, steppers and free weights will be available on site. The gym will also include a functional area for stretching and consultation room for customers wanting to avail of one to one advice and programmes. A Group fitness studio suitable for spinning, boxercise, pilates and yoga and a multi activity room for birthday parties are also planned.
The centre will close down for business on 10th August and the decommissioning work will take place the following week.
The outdoor synthetic pitch will remain open for most of the redevelopment with services and changing being provided from Mitchell Park changing Rooms. A booking process for this facility will be open shortly and details are available from the centre on 028 8167 0727.
Commenting on this important step in leisure enhancement process the Chairman of Strabane District Council said,
“Strabane District Council commissioned an ambitious capital development programme in its new Corporate Plan. I am extremely pleased that the project at Derg Valley Leisure Centre in Castlederg is proceeding as planned. This project will modernise the leisure facilities and offer more choice and quality of service for our local ratepayers.”
Strabane District Council is planning to invest a further £1.8 million in leisure upgrades at Melvin Hall and also is advancing a business case for the provision of a new leisure centre including swimming and outdoor facilities in Strabane.
Daniel Mc Sorley, Interim Chief Executive said.
“Strabane District Council has set out a clear and challenging programme of modernisation. Derg Valley is the first of our centres to begin this process of transformation with the redevelopment of Melvin and Riversdale to follow. I would encourage all customers of Derg Valley Leisure Centre to avail of our facilities in Riversdale whilst their local centre is being redeveloped. We apologise for this disruption to service and eagerly await the re-opening of the higher quality leisure facility in 2013.”
