The 16th Sperrins Walking Festival was officially launched in Plumbridge today (Monday 23 July 2012) by the Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan.
Councillor Kerrigan commented:
“The Sperrin upland area is extensive, unspoiled and generally undiscovered, I am confident that the walking festival’s participants will enjoy a wonderful weekend of exercise, fresh air and craic, whatever the weather.”
The festival gets under way on Saturday the 4th of August and runs until Monday the 6th of August. Over the weekend there will be the opportunity for walkers to enjoy some of the finest walking, rambling and other activities, set among some of Ireland’s most spectacular scenery the Sperrin Mountains.
The festival is designed to cater for walkers of all abilities and includes 3 days of challenging walks in the high Sperrin Mountains. The festival also includes 3 days of moderate walking in Glenelly`s medium level hills.
For those wishing to learn more about Glenelly, 3 easier paced history walks have also been created for the weekend.
Finally - family walks and nature trail activities will be taking place at Gortin Glen Forest Park.
All of the challenging and moderate walks will be led by professional hill walking guides who will also provide some interpretation on the way.
The festival base this year is the village of Plumbridge. There is self catering accommodation in Plumbridge and Glenelly, as well the surrounding area.
Equally important is the range of social events and activities taking place all weekend, allowing walkers to relax and unwind each evening and enjoy the unrivalled hospitality of Plumbridge.
Councillor Kerrigan continued:
“We all look forward to welcoming both locals and visitors to the 16th Sperrins Walking Festival. The weekend provides a wonderful opportunity to explore great natural scenery, renew old acquaintances and meet new friends, plus enjoy some evening entertainment after a day in the hills”.
The 2012 Sperrins Walking Festival is funded by Strabane District Council with the support of the Northern Ireland Forest Service and Sperrins Tourism Ltd.
