Large numbers turned out on Saturday last for the Strabane 10K Road Race and Leisure Walk organised by Strabane District Council and Strabane District Sports Forum. Over 400 runners and walkers took part in the event, run over the route from Railway Road, via Castletown, Prospect Road, Orchard Road and the Melmount Road with the race eventually finishing at Riversdale Leisure Centre.
The hugely impressive Noel Logan won the very competitive men’s section with a time of 33.49. Logan went clear from the gun, and had about a 100 metre gap built up by the first kilometre eventually going on to win the race by a comfortable margin. Equally convincing was Theresa McGloin from Finn Valley AC, who was the first female runner home in an excellent time of 36.09, one of the fastest female runs ever seen at the Strabane 10k.
Strabane District Council Chairperson, Mr Tomas Kerrigan said about the event: “I would like totake this opportunity to congratulate all the competitors, whether they are seasoned runners or health conscious joggers. Every single person deserves credit for their efforts in completing what must be said is a very difficult course.’’he continued “The event has been a great success and we would hope that the Strabane 10K Road Race and Leisure Walk will grow from strength to strength each year with the proceeds from the event benefiting local charities. Sport is always a strong tool for bringing people together for the benefit of others.”
The Strabane District Sports Forum Chairman, Mr Aodhan Harkin, paid tribute also to all the helpers. “The event has been a great success, one of our largest to date. However, the day would not have been so without the valued assistance of all the helpers and marshals from the various sports clubs in the area.”
As with previous years, participant’s entry fees have been donated to local charities. It has been agreed that the proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Strabane branch of Age NI and Castlederg Patient Comfort and Terminal Care Fund..
A sincere thanks is extended to all the sponsors of the event; Sperrin Springs, Order of Malta, Strabane District Council and to the Police Service for Northern Ireland for their assistance throughout the event.
