Strabane District Council held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night (05 June), electing a new chairman and vice chairman. Councillor Thomas Kerrigan (DUP) has taken on the role of civic leader for the next twelve months and Councillor Daniel Kelly (Sinn Fein) was elected as vice Chair.
Outgoing chairman, Councillor Brian McMahon received cross party tributes for his dedication and commitment shown whilst serving as Chairman. Councillor McMahon also thanked Councillor McGuire for his assistance whilst serving as Vice Chair. Daniel McSorley, Interim Chief Executive Officer, and the staff of Strabane District Council were also commended for their contribution and tribute was paid to those people and organisations that organised events at which he officiated at throughout the year.
This is the second time that Cllr Kerrigan has held the position of Chairperson of Strabane District Council, as he previously held office in the 2006/07 year. Councillor Kerrigan said that it was a “privilege and an honour” to be re-elected. He added that he would work for everyone and outlined his commitment to inclusion and to reaching out to all sections of the community. Cllr Kerrigan paid tribute to the outgoing chair and vice chair.
Councillor Kerrigan added: “It is a particularly significant time for Strabane District Council with our ambitious capital development programme and the pending changes proposed by the reorganisation of Local Government. I will focus on working with my fellow councillors on a common cause – improving services for the betterment of the citizens of Strabane District. Indeed, I look forward to maximising the potential of this area over the next, challenging twelve months.”
