Each of the towns and villages in Strabane District are gearing up to host the Olympic Torch Relay on the morning of Tuesday 5th June. The torch is due to travel through Magheramason, Bready, Ballymagorry, Strabane and Sion Mills from 8am to 9.15am. This week, the focus is on Ballymagorry where local school children have been preparing to give the torch a warm local welcome.
Olympic torch fever hit the surrounding primary schools this week as local children developed their own torches from recycled materials in specially organised Olympic arts and crafts workshops. Dara Hand, a renowned local artist has been commissioned to help the local school children to explore and depict creatively what this memorable occasion means to them.
The schoolchildren from Artigarvan Primary School and St Mary’s Cloughor were pictured on Tuesday getting ready to welcome the Olympic Torch into their own community.
Strabane District Council is calling on everyone from Ballymagorry and the surrounding areas to come out to witness the event. The Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian McMahon said: “Ballymagorry is poised to be a colourful and youthful spectacle. We will have the school children from all the surrounding areas there to cheer on the torchbearers as they run past. It promises to be a lively and youthful family event. This is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to see the Olympic Flame on our local towns and villages. Everyone is making a huge effort to celebrate this event and to give the flame a warm welcome.”
“We have community, sporting, business and cultural organisations across the district getting organised to celebrate the passing of the torch in their own way. This is Strabane District’s moment to shine as the passing of the torch will draw in global media attention. I would like to thank everyone in Ballymagorry for their work and contributions to this event to date and urge everyone to get up early on that bank holiday Tuesday morning and join in the fun.” Said Cllr McMahon.
