Bready poised to welcome the Olympic Torch with a song and dance

Each of the towns and villages in Strabane District are gearing up to host the Olympic Torch Relay on the morning of Tuesday 5th June. The torch is due to travel through Magheramason, Bready, Ballymagorry, Strabane and Sion Mills from 8am to 9.15am. This week, the focus is on Bready where local people have been preparing to give the torch a warm local welcome.

Strabane District Council is calling on everyone from Bready and the surrounding areas to come out to witness the event. The Chairman of Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian McMahon said: “Bready is poised to be a cultural spectacle. We will have the Lambeg drum, pipers and the ‘traditions meet’ Irish and Scottish dancers there. The Sollus centre are also hosting a breakfast in aid of Marie Currie cancer care. It promises to be a vibrant cultural event. This is a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to see the Olympic Flame on our local towns and villages. Everyone is making a huge effort to celebrate this event and to give the flame a warm welcome.”

“We have community, sporting, business and cultural organisations across the district getting organised to celebrate the passing of the torch in their own way. This is Strabane District’s moment to shine as the passing of the torch will draw in global media attention. I would like to thank everyone in Bready for their work and contributions to this event to date and urge everyone to get up early on that bank holiday Tuesday morning and join in the fun.” Said Cllr McMahon.

If you would like to get involved in organising an activity or event to mark the passing of the Olympic Flame, or would just like some further information please contact Strabane District Council on 028 71 381341 or via logging onto http://www.london2012.com/games/olympic-torch-relay/torchbearers/
