This warning comes in the wake of three very serious sheep worrying incidents throughout the district in recent weeks, where local farmers have lost twelve sheep and lambs between them as a result of attacks by dogs.
Brian McMahon, Chairman of Strabane District Council, said about the incidents:
“Strabane District Council promotes responsible dog ownership. Whilst most dog owners are responsible, others less responsible believe that dogs wandering around parks, lying out in the sun on pavements or roaming the countryside do no significant harm. However, the reality is that every unaccompanied dog has the potential to cause harm to property, people, livestock and itself.”
The Council is currently investigating several cases of sheep attacks and prosecution shall be recommended against any person found to be negligent. The message is simple, be a responsible dog owner, keep your dog under control and encourage others to do the same.
Mark Hegarty, Dog Warden, said: “The images of savaged and mutilated sheep may be disturbing to look at but unfortunately the reality is that if people fail to change their attitudes, these acts of gross cruelty shall continue to occur.”
