AFTER SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

As part of the ongoing development of sport and physical activity in the district, Strabane District Council Sports Development Unit, in partnership with local coaches have organised a six week after schools programme to take place at both Newtownstewart Centre 2000 and Derg Valley Leisure Centre.

SPORTS DIRECTORY LAUNCHED
September 2009
The Sports Development Unit of Strabane District Council in conjunction with the Strabane and District Sports Forum launched a New Sports Directory for the area on Thursday.
The Directory provides a user-friendly guide to the huge array of clubs within the district, from Soccer and Gaelic Football to Athletics and Karate. This one stop guide is aimed at highlighting the huge sporting opportunities provided by local clubs and encouraging the community to ‘get active’.

LARGEST EVER ENTRY MAKE STRABANE 10K A HUGH SUCCESS

Large numbers turned out on Saturday last for the Strabane 10K Road Race and Leisure Walk organised by Strabane District Council and Strabane District Sports Forum. Over 400 runners and walkers took part in the event , run over the route from Railway Road, via Castletown, Prospect Road, Orchard Road and the Melmount Road with the race eventually finishing at Riversdale Leisure Centre.

Mobile Cardiac Screening Facility visits Strabane
March 2009
Strabane District Council this week hosted a unique community-testing programme aimed at detecting and raising awareness of Cardiac Risk in the Young. As part of the ongoing development of sport and physical activity in the district, Strabane District Council in partnership with CRY -- UK (cardiac risk in the young) and Investing for Health organised for a mobile Screening Unit to visit Riversdale and Derg Valley Leisure Centres to screen in excess of 200 local athletes for anyunderlying heart defects.

Winners of the 2009 ‘People First’ Sports Awards were announced by Strabane District Council at the Alley Arts Centre last week. The awards are recognition of the efforts of the sporting community within the district. This is the sixth time that the Council and Strabane Sports Forum have held this event.

Special Olympics Ireland and Strabane District Council
Celebrate 30 Years Changing Lives

Strabane District Council this week hosted a very special event at Melvin Sports Complex to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Special Olympics in Ireland. Approximately 170 Special Olympic Athletes and Volunteers participated in numerous events throughout the morning culminating with the arrival of the Olympic Flame alongside two very special guests; the Sam Maguire and Tom Markham Cups for the afternoon’s presentation ceremony.

STRABANE 10K ROAD RACE LAUNCHED

Strabane will play host to a 10k Road Race and Leisure Walk on Saturday 5th July 08 aimed at attracting local and visiting athletes of all ages and abilities. Strabane Council, Strabane District Sports Forum and Sperrin Springs are promoting this year’s event, which is open to everyone, whether they are seasoned roadrunners, recreational joggers or health conscious walkers.

Launch of People First Sports Award

Strabane District Council in association with Strabane Credit Union this week launches the ‘People First’ Sports Awards for 2008 to recognise the efforts of the volunteers in our district who have made an outstanding contribution to Sport.
The Sports Development Unit in partnership with Strabane Sports Forum has selected ten different award categories, which they feel will encompass all areas of the voluntary endeavour.

Ballyfatten Park Re-Development Officially Completed
21st February 2008
A £100,000.00 project led by Strabane District Council and Sion Swifts to re-develop specialist sports provisions on the Ballyfatten Park site was officially completed. A grant of £72,263.00 was provided through Strabane Local Strategy Partnerships Peace and Reconciliation fund, which aims to promote programmes to support peace and reconciliation within the community. The proposed project aims to make a positive, visible and helpful contribution to the peace process by providing a neutral venue where people of all traditions can live and play together and take part in educational, leisure and cultural activities.

One-Stop Shop For Health Issues

The health evenings aim was to attract the local population, encouraging them to seriously consider how they feel about their body, mind and general well-being and included: Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Cholesterol Checks, Physiotherapy and Massage demonstrations, information on Food and Diet and a taste of what you can do over the winter months to Keep Fit and Healthy through Exercise.

“Gateway to Sport to leave it's Legacy”
January 2007
Strabane District Council in partnership with Strabane LSP, Youth Sport Foyle and Coaching NI recently completed the final coach development initiative available under the 'Gateway to Sport' Coach Education Programme. Coaching Packs and associated training were offered to local groups to aid the cognitive and physical development of children aged between 2 and 16, ensuring that they have the best possible opportunity to positively influence their core movement skills.

Improving people's health is a responsibility to which many agencies and individuals are committed. In recognition of the need to invest in health Strabane District Council recently hosted two Health Awareness Evenings in Newtownstewart Centre 2000 and Derg Valley Leisure Centre. Numbers in excess of 175 turned out to avail of the professional advice and demonstrations on offer.
