STRABANE DISTRICT COUNCIL
PRESS RELEASE
THE SUCCESS OF STRABANE 10K BENEFITS LOCAL CHARITIES
25 October 2007
Local charities, Knockavoe School and the North West Autistic Society are set to benefit financially, as a result of the huge success of this years Strabane 10K Road Race and Leisure Walk. The race, which is organised by Strabane District Council in partnership with Strabane District Sports Forum aimed to raise money for local charities. With over 180 runners and a similar number of walkers having taken part in the event, the committee decided to donate all the entry fees and proceeds to very worthy charities.
At a presentation ceremony in Strabane District Council Offices, Chairman Gerard Foley presented representatives from both organisations with cheques totalling £1,395.00 adding,
“I would like totake this opportunity to congratulate all the competitors, whether they are seasoned runners or health conscious joggers. Every single person deserves credit for their efforts in completing what must be said is a very difficult course.’’ He continued“The event has been a great success and we would hope that the Strabane 10K Road Race and Leisure Walk will grow from strength to strength each year so that a local charity will benefit from the large numbers taking part. On behalf of everyone involved in organising the 10k road race I am very pleased to be able to present these cheques to the North West Autistic Society and Knockavoe School.”
The Council’s head of Culture, Arts and Leisure welcomed this initiative, which is locally driven by the Sports Forum, local clubs and coaches within the district who are eager to promote sporting opportunities. The event, which is now an annual event in the Northern Ireland running calendar, selects a charity each year to benefit from any money raised through entry fees and fundraising on the day. A sincere thanks must also be extended to all the sponsors of the event; Sperrin Springs, Mc Gillion Cars, St John’s Ambulance Lifestyle Sports and Strabane District Council. Anyone wishing to become involved in next years 10k should contact the Sports Development Officer at Strabane District Council (02871 382204)
