STRABANE DISTRICT COUNCIL
PRESS RELEASE
PEOPLE FIRST” SPORTS AWARDS
20th February 2008
Strabane District Council in association with Strabane Credit Union this week launches the ‘People First’ Sports Awards for 2008 to recognise the efforts of the volunteers in our district who have made an outstanding contribution to Sport.
The Sports Development Unit in partnership with Strabane Sports Forum has selected ten different award categories, which they feel will encompass all areas of the voluntary endeavour. Council Chairman Gerard Foley said, “As well as highlighting the tremendous achievements gained, we also wish to recognise the unsung heroes of the community and sport sectors, those volunteers who give countless unpaidhours for the good of others.”
One previous nominee Peter Gillespie was declared the ‘Sports Star of the Year’ for his magnificent achievements throughout the previous year. Similarly Mr Francis Henderson received the sports merit award for his enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to sport and Special Olympics.

This year the Sports Forum have included three additional categories, which they feel, will help capture other great achievement from within the District. Chairman of Strabane Sports Forum, Bill McIntyre commented “Amongst those new award categories we have selected a ‘Hall of Fame’, which looks to recognise the achievements of past greats, who achieved success in their sport before the Sports Forum launched its awards scheme back in 2004”.
Strabane District Council invites nominations from organisations, community groups, sports clubs, schools, youth clubs and individuals, for the ten categories of awards. If you are aware of someone who deserves recognition for their efforts throughout the past year, this is your opportunity to give them something back.
The presentation of awards is to be held on 3rd April 2008 in the new Alley Arts and Conference Centre. Nomination forms are available from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Strabane District Council, 47 Derry Road, Strabane, BT82 8DY, Tel 02871 382204.
