STRABANE DISTRICT COUNCIL - SPORTS DEVELOPMENT
“Gateway to Sport to leave it's Legacy”
Strabane District Council in partnership with Strabane LSP, Youth Sport Foyle and Coaching NI recently completed the final coach development initiative available under the 'Gateway to Sport' Coach Education Programme. Coaching Packs and associated training were offered to local groups to aid the cognitive and physical development of children aged between 2 and 16, ensuring that they have the best possible opportunity to positively influence their core movement skills.
Whilst the 'Gateway to Sport' programme comes to a successful close, the partners were keen that there is some form of strategic legacy. The project has been successful in building the capacity of local coaches and now wants to ensure that these coaches have the resources and ability to but these skills into practice in the long term. This was achieved by providing coaches with Multi-Sports Coaching Packs and practical training on the equipment to ensure that they can continue to deliver a community based coaching programme beyond the lifespan of the 'Gateway to Sport' Programme. The initiative resulted in 35 coaching packs being allocated to clubs, coaches, schools and community groups.
The Gateway to Sport programme recognised that coaches have a vital role to play in the development of both sport and those people who participate. In addition the value of a motivated and well-qualified coaching network has been recognised as imperative to the provision of sport for all ages and levels of ability within the Strabane District Council Area.
This programme complemented and supported both local and area wide initiatives and has significantly increased the number of qualified coaches capable of delivering quality coaching. Thomas Kerrigan, Chairman of Strabane District Council stated, “Coaching is an essential aspect of the infrastructure upon which sport is developed. It is pivotal to the improvement of performance at all levels of sports development. This programme has ensured that coaches in this area have access to the latest techniques which will make an important contribution to developing a sustainable sports sector”
One of the major benefits of the programme is that it was practical in nature. This provided the opportunity for coaches to develop confidence, techniques and experience, which will maximise the impact these coaches will have in their communities.
