Castlederg and its Environs
The most westerly town in Tyrone, Castlederg stands on the banks of the river Derg and is a busy market town serving an important agricultural area. Investment opportunities exist both here and throughout the Derg Valley as a result of important strategies put in place by partnerships between the private, public and community sectors. These have included among others the provision of industrial and retail space as well as training.
Traditionally a travellers stage post, Castlederg and its local surroundings also boast ancient ruins, modern leisure facilities and its own purpose built visitor centre where such famous associations as Davy Crockett "King of the Wild Frontier" are celebrated. The town plays host to several of the district's key events each year including the Derg Vintage Rally which allows visitors and enthusiasts alike to experience some of the sights and sounds of yesteryear, and the traditional Apple Fair which sees the apple growers of Armagh visit to sell their wares.
Meanwhile, the nearby village of Killeter has attained significant national renown as a result of its annual August fair. This event celebrates the diversity and richness of rural life and affords an opportunity to sample the warmth of the local population. Killeter ,itself is situated along an ancient pilgrimage trail which winds its way to Lough Derg and as a result is rich in christian heritage. The national cycle network traverses part of this trail allowing visitors to enjoy a unique landscape bounded to the west by the magnificent Killeter Forest.
Also within the Derg Valley, several miles south west of Castlederg, lies the village of Killen. The efforts of the local community here in enhancing the investment potential within the area with the transformation of the old Killen Creamery into a community centre and enterprise centre, is indicative of the spirit of civic pride in existence throughout the district where such projects are commonplace.
