The pilot scheme of regeneration of Strabane Town Centre has led to the development of a rural scheme to tackle similar problems in the rural towns. The Economic Development Manager has worked closely with Donegal County Council to develop a programme through the Donegal/Strabane HEART programme that commenced in August 2006. This programme entitled HEART (Heritage, Environment, Arts & Rural Tourism) has achieved funding through the Interreg IIIa, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Border Action, the International Fund for Ireland and the councils of Donegal and Strabane. Rural Towns set to improve through this project are Castlederg, Newtownstewart, Sion Mills, Plumbridge and Donemana. Improvements will include community agreed Environmental Improvements, a public arts programme or sculpture trail, a shop front scheme for rural retailing premises together with a tourism signage programme across both councils. The Programme Manager for this initiative, Ms. Roisin Connolly, can be contacted at the Council Offices in Strabane 00 44 2871 381303.
