Background to the Gas to the West Campaign
Natural gas is now available in the Greater Belfast area. This brings with it cost benefits to consumers and businesses alike as well as positive impact on industrial development and the environment. The Government is soon to extend this natural gas infrastructure westwards to Derry/Londonderry, via Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine and Limavady.
This will mean that most of Northern Ireland will share in the well-known and undisputed benefits of this important energy source. This leaves the Rural West of Northern Ireland out in the cold. The Gas to the West Campaign is founded on the conviction that all the people of Northern Ireland should share in the benefits of natural gas. This means campaigning and lobbying for the Rural West to be given equal access. Not extending gas to the Rural West means that the region becomes even more peripheral, current industrial investment is threatened and the chances of future regeneration are diminished. There are also important environmental and social implications.
