Culture Arts And Leisure

The Department of Culture,Arts & Leisure

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL)embraces a broad development role for the delivery of high quality services in response to community needs. The department aims to proactively enhance and maximise provision in partnership with others across a range of services including:

  • Access To The Countryside
  • Arts Development
  • Community Safety
  • Community Relations
  • Community Support
  • Funding Support
  • Leisure Services
  • Museum Services
  • Outdoor Recreation Facilities
  • Sports Development
  • Tourism

The Culture,Arts & Leisure Committee oversees the work of the Department and facilitates the Council's consultative role with other agencies.

A range of modern facilities are provided to meet the leisure, sporting and arts development needs of local citizens - These includethe Alley Arts & Conference Centre, Riversdale Leisure Centre, the Derg Valley Leisure Centre, as well as football pitches, play areas and community centres. These facilities are an important dimension of the infrastructure across the district and are supplemented by a vast range of voluntary provision developed through an active sports club and community group structure.

Tourism services provided within the Department include Gray Printers Museum, and Castlederg Visitor Centre, both of which illustrate the history and heritage of the district. The recent development of countryside initiatives such as walking, fishing, canoeing and cycling provide ample opportunity for the local community and visitors alike to explore the areas' natural beauty. A range of partnership marketing initiatives has been developed to promote the district as a tourist destination on an attraction, activity, and cross border basis.

Much of the activity of the department reflects the Council ethos of involving community participation and empowerment. Resultingly, developmental initiatives for community relations, culture and arts, and sports development are strong dimensions of our role. Activities such as grant-aid programmes and funding support, events and festival programmes, public artworks, and the delivery of core officer support to community and voluntary organisations reflect the range of work co-ordinated by officers.
