Over 150 pupils and teachers from across the Strabane district participated in a ‘groundbreaking’ event organised by Strabane District Council’s Good Relations department.
The event aimed to dispel the myths around key organisations in our shared history today (Tuesday 29.04.08). Entitled "Uniting History", it was attended by Holy Cross College, Strabane and Strabane Grammar School as part of Community Relations Week.
Representatives spoke on the work of the Gaelic Athletic Association, Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, Ulster Scots Agency and the Ultach Trust. The speakers then took 30 minutes of questions from the young people, with chairman Tommy McLaughlin keeping things running smoothly.
Speaking about the event, Councillor Gerard Foley, Chairman of Strabane District Council said “Strabane District Council has hosted this event to promote equality and good relations in our district. It has clearly been beneficial for the young people who attended asthey were able to ask questionsand discuss Northern Ireland’s history in an open and safe forum. I think it made the diversity issues ‘more real’ for the young people, and it will assist them in understanding these issues when reading about them in school.”
Community Relations Week this year runs from 26th April to the 3rd May, and has the theme of "Work in Progress…Towards a Shared and Better Future". It features more than 130 events in district council areas across Northern Ireland and further information can be found at www.nicrc.org.uk.
The event was run in conjunction with the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland’s Education Programme. The Chairman concluded: “I would like to thank those who spoke at the event, the schools who attended and the staff of St Patrick’s Hall who all assisted us in making this event such a success.”
