Community Carol Service A Success
14th December 2007
Seven churches in Strabane united to hold a cross-community carol service last Thusday night, which was attended by over 180 people. The Community Relations Department of Strabane District Council were delighted to continue with this event, which was hosted by Christchurch, the Bowling Green, Strabane.
The service consisted of readings of the Christmas Story and favourite carols, with a universal appeal. Each church involved had a reader take part, with one of the readings in Polish. Soloist Bridgeen Tully and a local youth orchestra performed beautiful pieces throughout the service, with organist Roy Adams leading the choir. After the service, people enjoyed mince pies and tea in the festive atmosphere of the church hall.
This is the second year this event has been held, and it has become a special part of the build up to Christmas Day. Last year's service was held in St Mary's, Melmount and the clergy have agreed that it should continue to be rotated amongst the churches.
Speaking after the service, Councillor Gerard Foley, Chairman of Strabane District Council said “The service was thoroughly enjoyable and it was great to see so many people from all the different churches come together to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. I would like to express warm thanks to all those involved in making this event happen- the clergy, the young people from the WELB Music Service, the readers and choir, soloist Bridgeen Tully and organist Roy Adams. It was a wonderful evening."
