Stars of the Future
20th February 2008

Strabane District Council's Community Relations Department held a schools arts event for over 90 pupils at Derg Valley Leisure Centre on Wednesday. St Patrick's High School, Edwards Primary School, St Eugene's High School and Castlederg High School took part in the project.

The pupils enjoyed talks, demonstrations, workshops and a visit o a local engineering works during the programme, which ran throughout January. At Wednesday's finale, pupils viewed displays of their artwork and were warmly praised for their creativity.

The four schools will soon have an identical "Starfields" sculpture erected on each of their buildings, giving them a special relationship, which the Council's Community Relations Department is keen to foster. The four-pointed star design of the sculpture reflects the geographical location of the four schools in Castlederg and was inspired by a fall of meteorite "stars" in the Derg Valley in 1844.

This event is just one of many cross community initiatives operating between schools in the Castlederg area to improve mutual understanding and create a new and better future. The Community Relations Department is looking at ways in which this work with the schools can be further developed in the long term.
Speaking after the event, Councillor Derek Hussey, Vice Chairman of Strabane District Council, said "I have really enjoyed meeting the pupils and their teachers here today; without the schools' support and the artist's interest this project wouldn't have happened."
