VOLTAGE Championship Finals
Thursday, 2nd September 2010
Strabane Community Safety Partnership’s Voltage finished on Saturday 28th August with over 450 young people participating throughout the district in 8 heats. The programme is Strabane CSP’s Summer Splash youth diversionary programme, which has been designed to provide young people with activities to combat the temptation of becoming involved in anti social behaviour. Voltage was specifically designed to provide activities in the evening time and in locations where youths congregate. The Championship Final took place in Melvin Sports Complex. In the junior section, the A-Team, from Plumbridge, reached the final, competing against Sion Sav’s. Sion Sav’s were the victors on the night. In the senior section Mean Girls, from Magheramason, played against The Expendables from Strabane. The Expendables proved to be too good for the Mean Girls as they not only won the senior section but one of their players, Alan Mc Gill, was crowned the Laser Legend. Both winning teams received a Voltage t-shirt, an Apple Ipod shuffle and a certificate at a prize giving event held in Strabane District Council. Alan Mc Gill, The Laser Legend, also received an Apple Ipad.
Teams were given the opportunity on the night to compete against the Voltage ‘Elite’. The Voltage Elite team was made up of members from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Police Service of Northern Ireland and a Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator. Voltage was supported and part funded by the District Policing Partnership and the PSNI.
Councillor Michaela Boyle, Chair of Strabane Community Safety Partnership, speaking on behalf of the organisations involved in the programme, said “Voltage was extremely successful on a number of levels. The district wide heats, held within 8 different locations, brought the communities together to take part in a free event which was a lot of fun. The teams who progressed to the final represented their communities in a competitive tournament. I would like to thank all the youth, parents and community representatives who made the programme a success through their participation. Strabane Community Safety Partnership will continue the momentum by running Midnight Street Soccer and Dance Fusion at Dusk, which will begin on Friday 8th October 2010.”
