Sun Sets On Midnight Street Soccer

MIDNIGHT STREET SOCCER PRESENTATIONS

 Thursday, 7th May 2009

The presentation for Strabane Community Safety Partnership’s Midnight Street Soccer competition took place on Thursday 30th May 2009.

The winning teams were Head of the Town Maestro’s and Glebe Utd from Strabane and

Retro and Killer Pancakes from Castlederg. All teams will travel to compete in the national Midnight Street Soccer finals in the JJB soccer dome in Dundalk on Saturday 20th June 2009.

The winning teams received a full football kit and winners medals at the prize-giving and were also given the opportunity to play football against each other.

Councillor Brian McMahon, Chair of Strabane DPP said:  “Young people are often accused of hanging around on street corners at weekends and local residents complain of anti-social behaviour and underage drinking.  The Midnight Soccer project gave young people a chance to participate in something different on Friday nights and at the same time learn more about the effects of drugs and alcohol.  Strabane DPP was glad to support this worthwhile project.”

Councillor Derek Hussey, Chair of Strabane CSP said:  “This project provided the young people throughout Strabane District with the opportunity to partake in a soccer competition at times when there is a risk that they would be involved in anti social behaviour. The winning teams will now represent their respective areas as they travel to the national finals in Dundalk next month. I wish them well and I am confident that they will make Strabane District proud. Given the success of what was a pilot scheme we would certainly hope to hold the competition again and would encourage more participants to come along for a good night’s craic.”
