MIDNIGHT STREET SOCCER CHAMPIONS
Monday 30th November 2009
Strabane Community Safety Partnership’s Midnight Street Soccer and Dance Fusion At Dusk finished on Friday night, with presentations to both the footballers and the youth who had taken part in the Dance Fusion. The programme has taken place over 8 weeks this year from 9.30pm to 12 midnight on Friday nights. Youth were given the opportunity to become involved in the 5 a side Soccer Competition on the Astroturf at Melvin or to take part in the Hip Hop workshops in the main hall at Melvin.
The winning teams were Head of the Town Maestro’s and Toon Army. Both teams will travel to represent Strabane District in the national Midnight Street Soccer finals in the JJB soccer dome in Dundalk this weekend. Head of the Town Maestro’s will compete in the Championship section and Toon Army will compete in the Shield section. Earlier this year Glebe Utd won the Midnight Street Soccer Shield in Dundalk. The winning teams received a full football kit and winners medals at a prize-giving held on the night. The runners up in the competition were Glebe Utd and Glenfinners, both teams received rucksacks. Sion Swifts provided trophies for individual performances in the competition.
The youth who had taken part in the Dance Fusion At Dusk performed a dance routine at the Halloween Festival in Strabane and also performed a dance routine in front of the Junior Youth club in Melvin Sports complex on Friday night. The participants received t-shirts, hats and a certificate for their involvement in the programme.
Throughout the programme Foyle Woman’s Aid, The Nexus Institute and DIVERT had attended to provide information and advice to the young people. A media production team was also involved throughout the programme. A DVD, containing coverage of the football and hip hop classes and interviews with all involved, will be produced for the young people involved.
