Mephedrone Event

MEPHEPDRONE - DIVERT

When we think of drugs we often consider substances such as cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, speed!!!!

Although most people have an awareness of the drug culture within our city, most feel far removed from the knock on effects it has on individuals, families and communities.

In recent months however, we have been introduced to what could be described as a ‘new drug’, one which is easily available, affordable and most of all ‘Legal’. This drug is called Mephedrone.

On this basis, The Divert Project in partnership with Strabane Community Safety Partnership, Foyle Drug & Alcohol Forum & HURT will host a public information session on Tuesday 13th April at 7.30pm in the Alley Theatre, Strabane.

So what is this drug which is sweeping across our communities; devastating families; damaging our society and worst of all shattering lives?

Mephedrone is a Legal high, which basically means it is a drug which is not controlled under the misuse of drugs act therefore it is legal to possess. It is not however, legal for human consumption as the chemical compound has never been tested on humans.

Mephedrone within that is described as a ‘synthetic or designer drug’ which means that the drug is created to get around the drugs law. The drug is made up a number of different chemicals, all of which can be modified depending on the law.

The lead service provider for Alcohol and Drug Education, Prevention and Early intervention, DIVERT are only too familiar with the Drug and have seen a major increase in the number of young people and adults using the drug since before the Christmas period.

Brónach, Coordinator of Divert said, “ We are working strenuously to raise the awareness of the effects of this drug and have been inundated with calls from concerned parents in relation to their children misusing the substance. This drug is not targeted at any particular subset of our society. We have children as young as 14 using mephedrone as well as young adults who have been hazardously taking the drug over a number of days without a break.”

Divert have professional workers on the ground who are trained and skilled to offer educational advice and support in relation to mephedrone and other substances and would encourage any young person or concerned parent to come forward to the project for help.
