A Drop Too Far
15th December 2008
The Western Drug and Alcohol Co-ordination Team (WDACT) in partnership with the 5 Western Community Safety Partnerships is encouraging all revellers to enjoy their party nights this Christmas, but to ensure they have a sensible one and to know how much they're drinking.
"The Christmas party season is a fantastic time to let your hair down and have a drink with your friends", But over the years the strength of popular drinks has increased and glass sizes have grown - many people are unaware that a large glass of wine can contain as many as three units. Many people are regularly drinking at levels that could put them at increased risk of harm to their health and to their personal relationships without realising it. By recognising the units in their drinks, partygoers can ensure they have a safe and memorable evening, without embarrassing themselves".
Recommended Guidelines
Men
It is recommended that men drink no more than 3 to 4 units of alcohol a day and no more than 21 units over the course of the week.
Women
It is recommended that women drink no more than 2 to 3 units of alcohol a day and no more than 14 units over the course of the week.
With the Christmas Party in full swing, it's easy to drink more than you planned. To track the units in your favourite drinks visit www.knowyourlimits.info
Ways to find the balance over the festive season
* Reduce your units by choosing drinks that are not so strong
* Avoid "top-ups" so that you can keep track of your units
* Drink water between each alcoholic drink
* Have an alcohol free day
Everybody can enjoy a drink -
Know your units this Christmas they all add up!
