Life Skills Programme

Strabane District Council Community Safety Partnership  delivers unique life skills opportunity for Strabane Youths

February 2006

Strabane District Council Community Safety Partnership has delivered an innovative life skills programme in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Nine young people from the Strabane District Council area completed a week's intensive physical training programme normally provided to cadets in the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service. The programme concentrated on a range of topics and subjects such as Fire Awareness, A Role of a Fire Fighter, Team Building, Life Skills, the consequences of Anti-Social Behaviour, Hoax Calls, First aid etc.

The programme, which was also supported by Western Investing for Health, is a new programme, which has been developed by the Fire Service to help reduce fires, reduce death and injury, stop attacks on fire fighters which is in the process of a roll out across the province. As a result of Partnership working Strabane benefited from hosting the second programme in the Western Area and only the seventh in Northern Ireland overall.

The programme concluded with a gradation ceremony “passing out” day where the young people involved showcased the skills they had acquired over the week, and were presented with their portfolio of certificates for each subjects covered. The ceremony was well attended by a crowd of 60+ including parents, Council Officials and Chief Fire Officers. The pride on the faces of parents and the young people as they graduated from the programme was evident for all to see. The photographs attached highlight some of the challenges faced by youths throughout the programme.
