Halloween Safety Advice – A Timely Reminder

  17th October 2006

Strabane Community Safety Partnerhsip recently held a Halloween Safety Competition for all primary schools throughout Strabane District, highlightint the importance of having fun but being responsible during the Halloween period. The winning student was Gavin Traynor from St Patrick's Primary School, NTS who received book tokens for £15 from Ad Lib Bookshop, Strabane. His school received £100 book tokens from Ad Lib.

Strabane Community Safety Partnership has issued a timely reminder about the use of fireworks in the run up to the Halloween period.

Cllr Tom McBride, Chairman of Strabane CSP has advised that people should “be sensible, be safe and be responsible this Halloween.  We want everyone to enjoy Halloween but we want them to do this in a sensible and considerate way.  Some people in the community may feel vulnerable at this time of year and will not want to be disturbed by bangers and fireworks being let off irresponsibly.”

Strabane CSP wish to remind members of the public that they will require a licence before they can legally buy fireworks.  They advise that fireworks should only be purchased from licensed retailers and not from anyone calling at your home, selling in the street, from a market stall or car boot sale, as this type of selling is illegal and the fireworks may be unsafe.

Follow the fireworks safety code to stay safe this Halloween:

·        Fireworks should only be lit by a person aged 18 or over

·        NEVER return to a lit firework

·        NEVER throw fireworks

·        NEVER put fireworks in your pocket

·        NEVER light fireworks in the street

·        Keep your fireworks in a closed box

·        Read the instructions on each firework

·        Stand well back once the firework is lit.
